What are bag checks or security screenings?
Workers for retail companies frequently have to go through mandatory security bag checks before or after their shifts, or before they go on lunch or rest breaks. Workers often have to clock out before undergoing these bag checks, sometimes waiting in line for significant periods of time before a busy manager can come over to conduct the inspection and formally release them from work.
Do bag checks violate the law?
Security bag checks may be in violation of wage and hour laws in several states. These state laws require employers to compensate employees minimum wage and overtime for any hours worked over 40 hours in a workweek.
